ReaderCon Filipino Fridays: Introduction

I have always wanted to attend The Manila International Book Fair (next to Comic Con) but never had the opportunity so far, and the chances of getting to attend The Reader Con this September is quite slim, but I'm still keeping my hopes up. Anyway, I thought joining this meme would be a great way to get in touch with other readers in case I don't make it and meet you guys in person.

Hi, I'm Tin! I'm a relatively new blogger and I have been reading for quite some time now but the intensity of my love for books has increased even more about a year (or two) ago, right about the time where I discovered the Filipino Book Bloggers Community. I never thought there existed blogs devoted to books and a community of bloggers/readers who are very much into reading as I am, perhaps even more! It is through these blogs that I discovered a whole lot of other book titles, authors, genres and sub genres.

I normally go for young adult or adult fantasy. It can be urban, historical, epic/high, mythic fantasy. I also love dystopia and go for books with dark, surreal elements in it. But with my discovery of the book blogging community, I've started getting into and enjoying some contemporary young adult reads, and graphic novels as well as some kid literature and picture books. It's funny how I think I'm more of a kid now because I seem to delight in kid lit more than back when I was an actual kid.

For my favorite books:

1. Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
2. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
3. LOTR Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
4. The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
5. His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman
6. American Gods by Neil Gaiman
7. Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
8. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
9. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke
10. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
11. Graceling by Kristin Cashore
12. Mythology:  Timeless Tales of Gods and Goddesses by Edith Hamilton
13. The Lost City of Z by David Grann
14. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

For my favorite authors, it's Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, Suzanne Collins, Philip Pullman, Susanna Clarke, Michael Chabon, Laurie Halse Anderson, Patrick Ness...and a whole lot more.

For my comfort reads, it has always been something from the young adult section preferably fantasy. But when it comes to re-reading, Harry Potter still remains to be my number one go-to book. And some Betty and Veronica Double Digest. :)

For my best reads this 2011 so far: The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak, Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson, and Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre.

So that's it folks. I can't wait to read your post on this particular Filipino Friday meme topic!

  1. Hey, we have a similar reading experience! I mostly read fantasy before I started the blog and then I read recommendations by other blog friends and discovered that I enjoy contemporary reads too. We share several favorite authors - Cashore, Rowling, Tolkien and Pullman. I'm hoping that Megan Whalen Turner will be added to your list once you start reading the Queen's Thief series. :) Have you heard of Tamora Pierce, Sherwood Smith or Robin McKinley?

Yeah, I've heard of them, from your blog. Haha! I have Crown Duel, Beauty, and the Thief on my list and asked a friend to get it for me. No news yet as to whether she was able to get hold of them.I totally overlooked Tamora Pierce. Her book is Alana right?

  3. Awesome list! The Little Prince is one of my favorite books. I can't believe I never put a classics section on my post haha. The only things on your faves list that I haven't read and enjoyed are The Hunger Games (I knooow!) and The Lost City of Z (I'll have to look for it).

  4. Hi, Tin! Guess how many favorite books we have in common. Hint: >5. Keep up the good blogging job! And see you at the ReaderCon. :)

  5. @dementedchris
Wow, you've read all but two from my list! While from yours I think I've read just The Westing Game and from your fave authors: Blind Willow, Midnight's Children, and Fahrenheit 451.

Oh right, you did miss the classics! And I thought your post was already extensive. I usually have difficulty with classics though. The Little Prince is perhaps the only classic that made it (or perhaps will make it to my list :P) but Pride and Prejudice comes in as a close second.

The Lost City of Z is my first non-fiction read and I loved it! (I know you're expecting this: Whaaaaat! I can't believe you haven't read The Hunger Games!):P

  6. @Aldrin
Whoa! Really? we may have set a record there! I wonder if anyone can beat it? Haha:P

Hmm...you've gotten me curious now about which of the titles I've mentioned we have in common. I have a couple of guesses though. :P

Thanks Aldrin! I do hope I can make it to the ReaderCon and get to meet you all! :P

  7. Yay, thanks for taking note of some of my favorite authors. Hope you get to read their books soon! All of the titles that you mentioned are available in Fully Booked. And yes, Tamora Pierce wrote the Alanna books. :)

Aldrin made me count the number of favorites that we have in common! I have >5 too!

  8. Hi! I join Chachic and Aldrin among the people who have more than 5 favorite books in common with your list. And I've read all of them except Graceling and The Lost City of Z. So glad you also love Knife of Never Letting Go. It's my all-time favorite YA fantasy series. Next to Narnia, that is.:)

  9. @Chachic
Hey Chachic! Guess What? I have received The Thief and Crown Duel from my friend already! Woohoo! She wasn't able to get Beauty though.

    >5 too? Looks like Aldrin has a challenger! Haha:)

Hi! Yay, more than 5 as well! I'll put you guys in "my most in common with" hall of fame! Haha :P It's really nice to find people who share the same faves. I'm glad they made this meme. :)

I hope you get hold of Lost City of Z. It's a fascinating read about explorers. Graceling is also an enjoyable fantasy read.

I loved Knife! I haven't gotten hold of the rest of the series but I did read short novella The New World. I'm getting antsy as well for The Monster Calls. :P
