Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
A topic is featured every week to be answered with a top ten list.

1. Percy Weasley (The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling) - I don't mind that Percy is ambitious, a bit serious, and a stickler for rules and regulations, but I never thought it would come to a point where he would chose ambition over family. Slamming the door on mummy Molly Weasley's face like that. Snap out of it Percy! The Weasley's must unite! Thankfully, he did redeem himself in the end.

2. Cornelius Fudge (The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling) - Another one blinded by power and ambition up to the point of delusion. Who else would Percy take after, but his boss? He has this consuming paranoia about Dumbledore wanting to take his position that he launched a smear campaign against the wizard and Harry as well. Completely ignoring the big problem that is He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Bad Fudge.

3. Eowyn (Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien) - At the part where she kept pining for Aragorn, only to be rebuked each time, left me sad and frustrated for this woman. She wanted to ride with him to battle for goodness sakes. It's a good thing she dropped the whole thing in the end and found the dashing Faramir. Yay!

4. Archer (Fire by Kristin Cashore) - His over protectiveness, promiscuity, and his constant "Fire, will you marry me?" got on my nerves a bit. He is one persistent fellow, I'll give him that because Fire rejects him every time and yet he keeps at it. But what I don't understand is why he sleeps with half the women in The Dells and yet gets jealous if someone tries to even look at Fire.

5. Mr. Poe (The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket) - The Baudelaires really are an unfortunate set of kids, to have this man as their guardian. Even Lemony Snicket describes him as being as helpful as a jar of mustard. He doesn't seem to see the danger that the Baudelaires are in even when it is staring him right in the eye.

6. John Mandrake/Nathaniel (The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud) - This amazing boy magician frustrated me from the first book till about a quarter of the third book. He is stubborn, arrogant, and vengeful but he always shows hints of goodness from time to time that I want him to act on those hints, fully. So, it was frustrating for me when he reverts back to his pompous self. Plus he seems to put Bartimaeus into a whole lot of trouble, almost all the time.

7. Fitzwilliam Darcy (Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen) - For the most part of Pride and Prejudice, I was increasingly frustrated with him. What do you want to do? Earn Lizzie's affections or turn her away? Cue the Katy Perry song: "you're hot and you're cold, you're yes and you're no, you're in and you're out.....man up and make your mind Mr. Darcy! :D

8. Jace Wayland and Clarissa Fray (The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare) - Their relationship just made me dizzy and frustrated. We can't be together! Oh wait, actually we can! Nope, now we can't....again. I just gave up on them and started rooting for Simon instead.

9. Samantha Kingston (Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver) - Sam was stuck on a loop seven times over. And each time that she fails to save a certain someone and or notice Kent and or make her life better instead of miserable, made me more and more dismayed. But she grew up, as a character, and did the right thing in the end.

10. Holden Caufield (Cather in the rye by J.D. Salinger) - It frustrates me that I never could get Holden. My sister loves Holden and this book along with a bazillion other people. But I just couldn't bring myself to. Too bad because I think he's really smart but I just find him just a tad too angsty for my taste.

How about you? I'd love to know about the frustrating literary characters you came across. :)

    1. I know, right? Everyone in the Weasley family were solid. Save for Percy. And Holden is just someone I couldn't get.

I will be checking out your list, Liesel. :)

  2. Oh my gosh, I'm so with you on Percy. I think you explained it perfectly. And yes to Mr. Poe! I didn't think of him, but talk about frustrating.

I can't say that I found Mr. Darcy frustrating. Sure he makes mistakes, as does Elizabeth, but he didn't make me want to throw the book across the room or anything.

    1. Mr. Poe and Percy really are frustrating no? Both are oblivious to what their responsibility should be. Percy, as a member of the Wealsey family (son and brother), Mr. Poe as the guardian (someone who has their best interest at heart) to the Baudelaires.

Yeah, Elizabeth also made mistakes but I don't know why it was only Mr. Darcy that I found frustrating. He didn't make me want to throw the book across the room either. It was just an exasperated kind of frustration, which waned as I progressed with the story.

  3. I know what you mean about Jace and Clary! Argh!

Eowyn's one of my favorite literary characters. But I think I understand what you meant by being frustrated with her (though it's one of the reasons why I like her naman). :)

    1. I know, right? So, I'm team Simon. Haha!

Eowyn's a favorite of mine too, I love her so much that it just felt painful that she kept pining for Aragorn, only to be rebuked! So I wanted her to be over him asap. (Hello, Faramir):D
