Top Ten Favorite Fantasy Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish
which features a weekly topic to be answered through a top ten list.
The fantasy genre has always been my favorite, be it historical, urban, or high fantasy. It is the perfect escape from the hum drum of our normal lives. Anyway, let's get down to business. Here is my top ten list, in no particular order:

1. Megan Whalen Turner - She wrote The Queen's Thief series and she does political intrigue very well. I couldn't put down Queen of Attolia.

2. Jonathan Stroud - Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy is a great fantasy read about djinnis and master magicians and Old London with all its darkness and grittiness and mystery and magic, all told in the hilarious and witty voice of Bartimaeus.

3. Susanna Clarke - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell is a brilliant, smart, and well-researched fictional story on the magicians of London and of magical beings like Faeries. I love the formal sort of language that it is written in.

4. Juliet Marillier - I loved Daughter of the Forest, it's a wonderful fairy tale retelling with an epic fantasy vibe.

5. Philip Pullman - His Dark Materials is fantasy but with a bit of sci-fi or steam punk  It's been known for it's radical ideas about science and theology. It's exciting and controversial.

6. Neil Gaiman - He does the creepy and the fantastical so very well.

7. Rick Riordan - I think he does a great job at re-imagining mythology. His writes in a way that is easy to understand, straighforward and very current. Heroes of Olympus is my favorite series of his.

8. Garth Nix -  Sabriel is a great fantasy read. What with boarding school, necromancy, and zombies.

9. J.K. Rowling - You can never go wrong with the magical world of Harry Potter.

10. J.R.R. Tolkien - No explanations necessary for Mr. Tokien really. I mean he is the father of modern fantasy literature.

  1. You see I'm not big fan of urban or historical fantasy, but I have fee. I love Rowling. I mean who doesn't. And of course Tolkien. Gaiman is interesting, but I somehow cannot get into his books.
But I recommend you The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It has mystery, fantasy and it's truly amazing. My fave book and I think you might love it. :)
