Required Reading: August 2014

AUGUST REQUIRED READING REPORT

 1. Fear of Flying by Erica Jong - (4/5 Stars) Expected to giggle my way through this, as I did with the cover of  the 2003 NAL trade edition, but it turned out to be something different. "Good" different.

 2. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - (5/5 Stars) I haven't made my descent yet, you know, from that place that you go to, whenever you have just read something that threw you for a loop? A "good" loop, that is.

 1. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin - This is TFGs book of the month, the discussion of which is in collaboration with another book club Flips Flipping pages. I am currently reading this and chomping through it my way faster than expected. I think it is an excellent "book club" book.

 2. Mr. Fox by Helen Oyeyemi - Special thanks to Angus of Book Rhapsody, for being a big believer of the reward system and thus, this Oyeyemi book with an impossibly cute cover, found it's way into my hands. I found out they call this "fabulist" literature. They say the term is coined from the word "fable", and that it is some sort of literary fantasy? Oh, I don't know. Ahm jas gonna read eet. 

 3. Against Joie De Vivre by Phillip Lopate - This is just a one piece essay, about 13 pages long, that I stumbled upon on the internet. And I couldn't resist the funny, surly and erudite narration expressing distaste for the joy of living i.e. joie de vivre. I wonder what grumpy cat would say about joie de vivre? XD 

 * Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - (carry over for September) About 10% in and I do think this is shaping up to be a fun read.

      Will do! Besides the Mr. Fox fable, it's a bit of a take on the Blackbeard tale as well, the one where he keeps killing his wife. So it's going to be Gaiman-ish dark. :)

      Ako din! Hindi matapos-tapos yung CA buddy read natin. After awhile may tatanong and then we get headaches all over again. It's a cycle. XD

Instead of Three Wishes by Megan Whalen Turner

Image from Goodreads The first time I've heard of Megan Whalen Turner is through Chachic of Chachic's Book Nook . If you follow/frequent her blog, you'd know that she is a huge fan of Whalen's The Thief Series. Being a fantasy fan myself, I've put in The Thief in my (very long) book wish list. Since, I haven't really gotten around acquiring The Thief just yet, when I saw her name on this book I thought it would be a good chance for me to get acquainted with Whalen's writing style. Instead of Three Wishes contains seven short stories, all depicting the existence of magic in everyday lives. 1. Plague of Leprechaun - Tells the story of how a small idyllic town of North Twicking is shaken up by the news of a Leprechaun Sighting, bringing in an influx of tourists coveting the bag of gold that a leprechaun brings. What Reader Species Are You?
