Required Reading: December 2013

This is it, the last month of 2013. How could a year fly by so fast? And do they know it's Christmas time at all? Haha. Sorry, may last song syndrome lang. Anyway, here is how I fared for my November Required Reads:

 1. Tenth of December by George Saunders - (5/5 stars) Deftly written satire of contemporary life. It is intense and insightful and made me look at life a little differently. 

 2. The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster - (4/5 stars) Not your usual detective story. It's strange and confusing, but of the good kind. Also the type of book that will make you think about life and human existence. 

 3. The Girl Who Was on Fire: Your Favorite Authors on Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy - (Unfinished) I wasn't able to make much dent on this because I decided to join the buddy read for A Feast for Crows by GRRM and it kept me well away from The Girl on Fire. But the Catching Fire movie adaptation was great though. It was grand and spectacular and emotional. I teared up a bunch of times. Basically, any scene with Mags in it. :)

The Filipino Goodreads Group's book of the month is...wait for it...Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! Isn't that as treacle tarty awesome! Okay, I just want to get that out of my system. Now to business....

 Since December is well, Christmas time, and we all know that Christmas time is really for children (segue!) Henceforth, my reading list for the month will feature books with extraordinary children in them. Just like The Boy Who Lived. 


1. The 10 pm Question by Kate De Goldi - This story features Frankie, a gifted artist and a bird lover, and also a chronic worrier and a hypochondriac. At age 12, his brain plagues him with one worrying thought after another. 

 2. Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool - This one was reccomended to me by the lovely Louize of Page Walker. Early Auden is an unusual boy, as he has Synesthesia. It is a neurological condition that affects the senses. Early, along with another boy Jack find themselves on a journey following the Appalachian trail.

3. A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin - I am currently halfway through and I am loving the new POVs.

    We have the same rating for NYT. I left one star for the fact I can't understand everything, LOL!

    Watching Catching Fire this weekend. Can't wait to go back into the arena (no, not really, when you think about the killings haha).

    *envy envy* over AFFC. I haven't touched Book 2 for weeks! Tsk. But I will carry on, that's for sure. I'm only waiting for the perfect time (aka less workload, more reading time).

      Lol! Lynai, that is exactly why I left out one star too! You psychic? Hahaha!

      Ay, Catching Fire! I am excited for you! Don't drink too much, because it's 2 hours and 40 minutes long. Hehe.

      Don't worry over ACOK. GRRM still has 2 more unreleased books in the series. So, you still have plenty of time to catch up by then. Haha.

Instead of Three Wishes by Megan Whalen Turner

Image from Goodreads The first time I've heard of Megan Whalen Turner is through Chachic of Chachic's Book Nook . If you follow/frequent her blog, you'd know that she is a huge fan of Whalen's The Thief Series. Being a fantasy fan myself, I've put in The Thief in my (very long) book wish list. Since, I haven't really gotten around acquiring The Thief just yet, when I saw her name on this book I thought it would be a good chance for me to get acquainted with Whalen's writing style. Instead of Three Wishes contains seven short stories, all depicting the existence of magic in everyday lives. 1.
