Top Ten Most Memorable Secondary Characters

1. Podrick Payne (A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin) - Pod, a squire, became memorable and instrumental to his Lord (Tyrion), at a certain battle. And I think he brings out something in his master, sets up a good example for him. At least, make him still believe that their are such things as trust and loyalty a midst the traitors and liars in King's Landing.

2. Sandor Clegane (A Clash of Kings by Geroge R.R. Martin) - What I like about Sandor Clegane as a supporting character is that he has a pretty interesting back story and that he is quite ambiguous, in terms of whether he is a good guy or a bad guy. He is layered character, which challenges major characters that interact with him in the story, like Sansa for example who can't seem to put a finger on him.

3. Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by J.K. Rowling) - Anyone who can think up words like Spectrespecs, and Crumple-Horned Snorkack is memorable in my book. Plus, she is pretty smart and confident and brave and proved to be a wonderful friend and ally to Harry.

4. Neville Longbottom (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling) -  What I like about Neville is that he isn't particularly good looking, or uber smart, or quirky, or 'comedian' funny. And because he doesn't have any of those traits, he is almost always afraid and nervous and shy. But then he soon turned out to be really brave and loyal and even stood up to, not only Bellatrix, but even to Voldemort himself.

5. Lee Scoresby (His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman) - This 59 year old Texan aeronaut/balloonist reminds me of a variety of Clint Eastwood's character. Tough, and unforgiving, but loyal, and upright. He initially did not stand out for me. Just your everyday stereotypical aging soldier-type cowboy but he grew as a character and the role he played in Bolvangar was pretty big and his scene at the pass where he was sobbing and holding Hester, his deamon. It was just so...gah!

6. Cinna (Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins) - Cinna is a great supporting character because he turned out to be an unexpected ally. Considering that he is a Capitol resident. I was ready for him to be a little shallow, and flashy and over the top. Instead he turned out to be smart and brave with his little subtle touches of defiance and rebellion here and there. And he turned out to be more than a stylist to Katniss.

7. Wilf (Monster of Men by Patrick Ness) - While I do like ambiguity in characters, from time to time I also enjoy straight-up, no nonsense guys like Wilf.  He is just very very genuine and honest and unselfish. Not a mean bone in his body.

8. Petra Arkanian (Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card) - Petra stands out in Battle School not only because he is a kick-ass female in a sea of boys, but because she is a perfect supporting character in a way that she is instrumental to Ender's success. She was among the first to help and look out for him, when it could have been way easier for her if she just steered clear of Ender.

9. Inspector Le Strade (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) - He pops in and out of the short stories for me to notice him. But it was actually in the BBC TV series called Sherlock where I truly enjoyed this character. He is played by Rupert Graves and I think his straightforward and practical personality is a perfect contrast for Sherlock's impulsive and unconventional ways.

10. Nico di Angelo (The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan) - He can open up fissures that can swallow you whole, he can raise a whole army of the undead, and he can also travel via a shadow. How cool is that? Those and the fact that he is a bit of a messed-up character ever since his sister died. He went from a happy and fun boy to a morose, angry, grudge filled, and grief laden kid and that made me interested to follow his plight.

That's about it folks. It would make me very happy if you would share your thoughts on my list or perhaps your very own favorite secondary characters.

  1. We have three characters in common this week. I love Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom as well. Pretty much for the same reason as you. I'd add Luna's quirkiness though for me! I also have Cinna on my list this week.

    1. Hi Chrissi! Yes, quirky = Luna, definitely. I also forgot to mention that I like how she doesn't care what other people think of her. :) Yay for Neville and Cinna too! :D

  2. Hi Tin. I have 2,3,5, and 6 on my list (if I make one) too.
Their tangential stories are very interesting on itself. :)

    1. Very true. But I am extra happy you picked #5! Nobody seems to remember Lee Scoresby, and he is awesome. :D
