Top Ten Books I Recommend the Most

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.
1. The Hobbit and LOTR Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien - Tolkien's is the best epic fantasy adventure ever told. The world he creates is so very vast and imaginative, and the lore, rich.

 2. Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter is probably the most iconic fantasy read of today's time and rightfully so because it is a wonderful and magical coming of age story. Every one should know about The Boy Who Lived.

 3. His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman - I love that this is a mixture of fantasy and a little steampunk/sci-fi. Plus the whole theology element in it makes it a bit different. It has characters and magical creatures too. Who could forget Lyra and the deamons, and the Great Polar Bear, Iorek.

 4. The Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner - Smart and witty fantasy novel steeped in political intrigue. This series is unlike any other I've read.

 5. Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud - One Word. Hilarious. Bartimaeus is a wise cracking djinn that everyone will love. Plus, it also contains other equally wonderful characters like Nathaniel and Kitty. Think Prestige or Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell but more fast paced and for younger readers.

 6.The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins - Probably my favorite dystopian YA read to date. It's fast paced, action-filled, gritty, thought-provoking, romantic... It's unputdownable.

 7. Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness - Another awesome dystopian YA read. I like it for the same reasons as The Hunger Games but with the romance, more subtle.  

 8. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke - I hardly like anything non-YA (well, except for LOTR and a few Gaimans maybe), but JS and MN, I adore. I love how detailed it is regarding the history of Magic and Britain. I also love the formal way in which it is written. Very Old English. The footnotes might seem a bit tedious to read but it's totally worth it.

 9. A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly - It's a simple coming of age story really, but it is just so beautifully written. I find many book lovers will be drawn to Mattie and her story. 

 10. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak - The story is told through death's POV. It uses words and colors in such a haunting and lyrical way. It's a little heavy on the heart though but a satisfying read nonetheless.

 Looking at this list, I have 7 series, 3 stand alones, and more than half belong to the fantasy genre. Gleep. No contemporary. If the list would be more than the requisite 10, I would've included maybe Perks of Being a Wallflower. Before I Fall was pretty good too. And Dash and Lily's. :)

    #1, 3, 8. These are in my soon-to-read shelf, especially His Dark Materials, only that sometimes I get distracted with other books on my TBR haha!

      1,3, and 8 are awesome. I tell you. Haha. I do wish they'd make another movie adaptation of His Dark Materials, for book 2: Subtle Knife.

      The Northern Light was the one that got me back to try more historical YA, after not touching the genre for some time. I adore Mattie and Weaver. :D

    So many awesome series!!!!! I have to read The Book Thief soon, I love books with an interesting point of view and I've heard nothing but great things about it.

      I know, right? I seem to gravitate more towards series and fantasies. And The Book Thief is really as good as everybody says it is.

    I just bought Tolkien's books today, and I'm excited to start on them! Of course, I loooooove The Hunger Games like most people. I haven't read any of the other books on this list, but I do love me some Before I Fall.

      Yay! You bought the Tolkien books! I'm excited for you! Haha. I recommend you start with The Hobbit. Especially since part 2 of it's movie adaptation will be out sometime this year. :D

      The Hunger Games is awesome. Really excited for the Catching Fire movie. And Before I Fall was a pleasant surprise for me. I did not think I would like it, but I did. :)

    Oh excellent - I think we have very similar tastes in books! Because HP, The Hobbit, and His Dark Materials were some favourites of mine growing up! And The Hunger Games and Chaos Walking are some recent favourites of mine. As for the rest, I really, REALLY need to read them badly - and I know I would love them, as well.     I haven't read everything on your list, but I do agree with you on The Book Thief and The Hunger Games series. Oh, and I'm reading Dash and Lily's Book of Dares now. ^_^

Instead of Three Wishes by Megan Whalen Turner

Image from Goodreads The first time I've heard of Megan Whalen Turner is through Chachic of Chachic's Book Nook . If you follow/frequent her blog, you'd know that she is a huge fan of Whalen's The Thief Series. Being a fantasy fan myself, I've put in The Thief in my (very long) book wish list. Since, I haven't really gotten around acquiring The Thief just yet, when I saw her name on this book I thought it would be a good chance for me to get acquainted with Whalen's writing style. Instead of Three Wishes contains seven short stories, all depicting the existence of magic in everyday lives. 1. Plague of Leprechaun - Tells the story of how a small idyllic town of North Twicking is shaken up by the news of a Leprechaun Sighting, bringing in an influx of tourists coveting the bag of gold that a leprechaun brings.
