Top Ten Favorite Romances (2012-Present)

It's Valentine's Week! It's time to do one of my favorite lists whenever this time of the year rolls around. My list consist not of my favorite romances of all time but of those romances read in the span of the previous year until the present date of posting, that is, books read in 2012-February 12, 2013. So, that I can make this a yearly thing without repeating the entries.

1. Kitty and Nathaniel (The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud) - I loved that theirs wasn't really an obvious kind of romance. It wasn't the touchy-feely kind, in fact they hated each other's guts with passion. But eventually, there was a love formed out of the mutual respect of each other's bravery, strength, and goodness.

2. Dash and Lily (Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan) - I love how the paths of these two seemingly opposite individuals, crossed. It was through exchanges of dares and letters written inside a red notebook. I loved that I  was never for certain if they'd really end up together.

3. Samantha Kingston and Kent McFuller (Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver) - The romance started out as unreciprocated and it was another slow and steady development from there. And yeah, as mentioned earlier, I am a fan of slow and steadys.

4. Duke/Angie and Tobin (Cheertastic by John Green taken from Let it Snow by Lauren Myracle, John Green, and Maureen Johnson) - I do love romances that stems from being the best of friends first and that is what Duke and Tobin was, up until they learned and admitted and risked that they could be something more.

5. Tabitha and Peter (The Stars at the Finish Line by Wendy Mass from Geektastic! edited by Holly Black and Cecil Castelluci) - These two are the smartest of their class and have always been competing to outdo the other. It turns out that Peter has a crush on Tabitha all along. I think one of the reasons why I liked this particular romance is because it reminded me of two of my friends back in high school and because the romance was just so geektastic. Plus I learned quite a bit about astronomy from these two.

6. Marcie and Linus (Love and Leftovers by Sarah Tregay) - What I like about this particular romance is that it seemed real. An earnest young love story, showing the bumps and twists of teenage relationships. Plus, theirs was a relationship grew stronger from something that initially started as luke warm.

7. Eugenides and ***** (The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Tuner) - I don't want to spoil the awesomeness of the story so Gen's lady shall remain nameless. Their romance, I loved because it's the "the more you hate, the more you love" kind. Plus, it was so unexpected!

8. Dexter and Remy (This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen) - This is one of those romances that seemed to be doomed to failure. Those that you think won't even work from the get go. Not only are their personalities different but their views on love and relationships goes in opposite directions as well. But they surprised me.

9. Hazel/Frank/Leo (Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan) - I have had my fair share of love triangles in books but this one did not quite put me off, probably because the kids were interesting and unusual. They weren't the cookie cutter good looking teens and are underdogs compared to Percy-Annabeth and Jason-Piper. Plus they had back stories that are seemingly intertwined.

10. Todd and Viola (The Ask and The Answer by Patrick Ness) - I have been rooting for these two in The Knife of Never Letting Go, but never really thought about how strong their bond is up until the second installment. This is when I saw how much these two really care for each other and just how much their relationship have been tried and tested.

How about you? I'd love to know your favorite literary romances. :)
