Faves of 2011: The Random

Nomes of Inkcrush is hosting The Faves of 2011 Awards. This time the topic being: Random Stuff.

1. Fave first sentence
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
First the colors
Then the humans
That's usually how I see things
Or at least, how I try.

2. Fave book title
The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. It rhymes. :D The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty. Secret assignments sound very intriguing.

3. Fave reading experience (ie: created a great reading memory)
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. I will always remember The Book Thief because it made me realize how very very lucky I am to be born in this time and have the family that I have.

4. Book with the most sensual weather (made you shiver/sweat)
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. This one's definitely on the shiver side because it was snowing in Sweden that and also the thought of having a murderer on the loose. So it's pretty chilling (excuse the pun).

5. Can’t believe you waited this long to read the book (!)
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta because it has been a long time that I've liked a contemporary YA and I was surprised. This is my best contemporary YA to date. I can't believe it is only now that I have gotten to know of Melina Marchetta.

6. Book you'd give your mum/sister to read
For mom: This is a Crazy Planets by Lourd De Veyra
For my eldest sister: Fairytale Fail by Mina Esguerra or The Help by Kathryn Stockett
For my other sister: Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2012

7. Book you'd like to give your past-self to read (ie, me, when I was 15)
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta and also A Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty. I think these books will help my past-self to loosen up a bit, and be a teen. I was a bit uptight and stuffy then. Teehee.

8. Book that lived up to (or superseded the hype)
Trese by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo. especially before the launching of the 4th installment, there was so much buzz on this one. When I finally gotten around reading book 1, I loved it. It definitely lived up to the hype.

9. Book you stayed the latest to finish (confess!!!)
Fairytale Fail by Mina Esguerra, chick lit's not normally my thing but I confess I stayed up late for this one. It's a pretty short e-book so I kept saying just a few more pages, and a few more...Teehee.
 
10. Book you were *dying* to get your hands on the most
Anything Aussie YA really because they are not as readily available here. This year I got my hands on Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta, A Year of Secret Assignments and Feeling Sorry for Celia both by Jaclyn Moriarty.

11. Fattest brick of a book you read (by page count)
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. And my copy is a Mass Market Paperback where the font is teeny tiny and jet it spanned 644 pages.

12. Killer cliffhanger award
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness it has that oh-no-but-what-happens-next kind of ending.

    Yay for Fairy Tale Fail! I stayed up late to read that too. Is that the copy that you won from my giveaway? :P Always happy to spread the word about Mina's books.

    I really hope you get to read more Aussie YA next year. I have a feeling you're going to love Jellicoe Road and The Piper's Son. And you can read the rest of Jaclyn Moriarty's novels although I'm a bigger fan of her sister Liane's books.     Yup! It's the copy I won from you! I read it on my laptop late at night. Hihi. :D

    Hooray hooray for Aussie YA! I really look forward to more of it next year. You know, I used to be all fantasy but thanks to Aussie YAs, I am loving contemporary. I might be exploring more of that genre next year too :D

    Awesome list! I totally know what you mean about The Book Thief - it would have featured prominently in my list if I'd read it this year! Such a wondeful first sentence - and a wonderful book! I feel like I need to read more Aussie YA - and I live here! It's terrible. I loooove Marchetta and yet I've only read two of her books. Isn't that terrible?! I plan to rectify that in 2012.

    I plan to try Marcus Zusak's other books, perhaps they are as great as The Book Thief.

    Haha! Don't feel bad about it, there's always next year for more Aussie YA. :) I plan to read more Marchetta too next year! I am surprised that she not only does contemporary but fantasy as well. I think her fantasy novel is called Finnick of the Rock. I'm looking forward to that. :D

Instead of Three Wishes by Megan Whalen Turner

Image from Goodreads The first time I've heard of Megan Whalen Turner is through Chachic of Chachic's Book Nook . If you follow/frequent her blog, you'd know that she is a huge fan of Whalen's The Thief Series. Being a fantasy fan myself, I've put in The Thief in my (very long) book wish list. Since, I haven't really gotten around acquiring The Thief just yet, when I saw her name on this book I thought it would be a good chance for me to get acquainted with Whalen's writing style. What Reader Species Are You?
